Period: 1980 - 2002
Area: Southern Black Sea, Sea of Marmara, eastern Aegean Sea, and the northeastern Mediterranean
Abstract: Potentially toxic and harmful phytoplankton species along the Turkish coasts of the southern Black Sea, Sea of Mar- mara, eastern Aegean Sea, and the northeastern Mediterranean were detected between 1980–2002. Twenty-one potentially toxic microalgae were recorded: three cyanophytes that can cause hepatotoxic effects; fourteen dinoflagellates with a po- tential to cause Diarrhetic Shellfish Poisoning, Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning, Azaspiracid Poisoning, and yessotoxin-like poisoning symptoms; three diatoms, which can cause Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning; and a raphidophyte species. Harm- ful but non-toxic blooms were very frequent in the eutrophic Black Sea, Sea of Marmara, and the eastern Aegean coasts.
Map: Sampling stations (numbers) and localities (A, B, southern Black Sea; C–E; Turkish Straits [Sea of Marmara]; F–H, east- ern Aegean Sea; I, J, northeastern Mediterranean). Sampling periods: A, 1993–1994; B–F, 1999–2003; G, 1980–2003; H, 1990–1991; I, 1999–2001; J, 1996–2003.
