Cell volumes of phytoplankton of the Black Sea
A.S.Mikaelyan, L.G.Senichkina, L.A.Pautova, L.V.Georgieva, V.Dyakonov

During the several past decades a lot of phytoplankton researches have been done in the Black Sea. In spite of a huge amount of information collected, these data could not be easily used for join analysis. As usual, historical data are not still entered to computers or data formats are different. This problem is extremely evident, when the species level data are under consideration.

The first phytoplankton data format and calculating software were designed in P.P.Shirshov Institute of Oceanology (Moscow) in 1980 by Drs. N.Nezlin and A.Mikaelyan, then they were rearranged by Dr. A.Mikaelyan in 1989, then a database software was created by Dr. V.Dyakonov.

This format was used in Institute of Oceanology (Moscow, Russia) as well as in the Institute of Biology of the Southern Seas, (Sevastopol, Ukraine). Format includes codes of single species (with the coding species list), number of counted cells coefficient to liter and cell weight. The later is the result of calculations based on the cells shape measurements using the geometrical formula. These volumes are the expert assessment of specialists working long time with the Black Sea phytoplankton: Dr. Ludmila Senichkina Dr. Ludmila Georgieva Dr. Larica Pautova Dr. Alexander Mikaelyan

Some data were computed during the current work. A most bulk of historical data was computed during the NATO projects “SfS Tu-Black Sea”,and “SfP ODBMS Black Sea” in 1994-2000. Eventually the data base covered the time period from 1968 till 2005. The total number of stations is 902, the number of samples is 2600, and the number of species entries 64000. The data were quality checked by visual methods as well as with some statistical procedures.

Cell volumes table

The table contents a list of species, the minimum, average, maximum cell volumes (cubic microns) and the number of measurements. It is regular practice when the cell volume estimated at the first station of the cruise and then used during all survey. In this case we considered such evaluation as one measurement. Due to this the total number of species entries used for analysis was 17000.

We decided to publish in this table also spp. species. The volumes range for genera also could be useful. For the same reason we left in the table all species even they were identified only once.

We hope that this species volumes list will be useful for the phytoplankton beginner specialists as well as for experienced scientists.

We are open for any notes and suggestions.
