A new dinoflagellate of the genus Protoperidinium is described from coastal waters of the northeastern Black Sea using SEM. Protoperidinium ponticum has a plate formula of Po, 4', 3a, 7", 4C, 6S, 5"', 2"". The new species is recognized based on a unique set of morphological characteristics: globoid shape, large sulcal list, lack of antapical spines, descending cingular displacement of 1x cingular width, and epithecal plate pattern. P. ponticum was observed in plankton samples from the August–September 2003 coastal phytoplankton peak. During previous routine phytoplankton counts by light microscopy, P. ponticum was most likely identified as Diplopsalis sp. or Oblea sp.
