Peridiniella sphaeroidea from J. Dodge. J. Dodge gave two quite different photos of this species, first in his Atlas of dinoflagellates in 1985 (Dodge, 1985, images reproduced in a,b,c) and later in 1987 in his publication on SEM study of P. sphaeroidea and P. catenata (Dodge, 1987, images reproduced in d-k). The Black Sea P. sphaeroidea resembles completely the cell presented and described in Dodge, 1987. |
Another species in the Black Sea, which resembles the misidentified P. cf. sphaeroidea sensu Dodge (1985), however, the SEM investigation revealed different plate pattern and cell ornamentation. It might belong to the genus Heterodinium, however more detailed SEM investigations are required to precisely identify it as Heterodinium sphaeroideum. Photo by V. Velikova. |
