Microcystis aeruginosa

From Black Sea Phytoplankton checklist

Jump to: navigation, search
Microcystis aeruginosa (Kützing) Kützing, 1846
= Clathrocystis aeruginosa (Kützing) Henfrey, 1856; Microcystis aeruginosa f. aeruginosa Kützing (mentioned for the Black Sea)

Classification

Bacteria (Kingdom) > Cyanobacteria (Phylum) > Cyanophyceae (Class) > Chroococcales (Order) > Microcystaceae (Family) > Microcystis (Genus)

WoRMS: 146558

Properties

Environment: marine
Harmful effect: Species in this genus appear to produce several peptide toxins, known as microcystins, which usually produce liver damage as well as having tumor promoting activity.
